Robert de Mortain

sorry no picture of this pub

The Robert de Mortain is a tied/managed Green King brewery pub, and fairly typical of their portfolio. As a pub, it is clearly having an identity crisis, as it can't decide on whether it's a gastropub, a venue for functions (usually funerals from the crematorium just up the road), a child friendly/family venue or a pub for locals - it's an uneasy mixture. On the plus side, it is a spacious detached Edwardian building having large rooms with high ceilings. There is a large garden backing onto woods, a recently added 'smoking deck', overlooking the garden (to keep smokers happy and out of the way) and a function room located on the first floor. Disabled access is via the very large front door. Drinks are the bog standard Green King range, although the current manager (an Irishman) has done wonders with the Guinness! Food is available all day, but is the standard frozen pre-prepared menu we sadly find in a lot of places these days. The decor, which was redone several years ago, is unfortunately bland and lacking in character. Sky TV is currently being installed in a mistaken attempt to add focus. Shame as it could be so much more.
