White Horse

Picture of White Horse

The north end of Bromley is something of a hinterland, separated by the A21 from the town centre and rarely sought out by shoppers or visitors. It also happens to be a veritable pub oasis, with at least five places within ten minutes' walk of one another - and hence ideal for a mini crawl. The White Horse has a traditional feel. It has a large, L-shaped bar which dominates the pub (the pub itself is fairly small), the jukebox plays a number of dated hits (and, oddly, the Glasgow Rangers anthem "Follow Follow"), bottled light ale is available for GBP1.50, and there is an original coal fire still in use. Dogs are welcomed - the owners often have water bowls out, and the bar and the walls are adorned with military caricatures and tributes to white horses (well, why not). It's the White Horse's misfortune that it is within spitting distance of, inter alia, the excellent Red Lion - but we like this place. It's perfect for a Saturday afternoon in the British winter, and in the summer it's charming with the doors open and the odd hound wandering about. Despite a recession-induced downturn in activity earlier in the year, we are pleased to report a bustling bar one recent weekday evening - characterful locals like this deserve to thrive.
