St. James Tavern

In the wilderness of Bermondsey, the St. James Tavern looked inviting. An old Victorian place, it was possible to see the 1970s gantried bar within and on an crisp autumnal night, it seemed to fit the bill for a quick pint. Sadly all enthusiasm dried up when we entered. It became quickly clear this is a local's place. Miserable, monosyllabic service from behind the bar was compounded by a group of locals who could only communicate by shouting. The jukebox was turned up to maximum so they could regale anyone in the pub (ie: them and us) with a karaoke rendition of Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love. It pays to stick to lager in this sort of place, so we realised very quickly that it was a mistake to order the Pedigree, which tasted as bad as it smelt. Being the kind of place we didn't wish to complain too loudly, we left again with our drinks virtually untouched, never to return. Backstreet boozers are a dying breed and need to be supported. However, this was a truly depressing place.
