Thatcher's Arms

Picture of Thatcher

Despite sounding like it could be in South America, Mount Bures is actually a small village on the Sussex-Essex boarder and away from the main centre of the village lies the Thatcher's Arms. Country pubs are often a mixed bag, with many now heavily focussed on food and victims of over enthusiastic refurbishments; unfortunately the Thatcher's Arms falls into this category. It's an old pub but the boxy whiteness of the exterior doesn't lure you in, while the interior could be described as veering into 'Travelodge, circa 1998' territory. We were also surprised by the amount of reserved signs - either Sunday Roasts don't pass much muster in Essex, or people have low standards, as the food was distinctly average. Still, service was pleasant enough, even if enquiries after our health felt a little contrived. Still, there's a very good selection of regional, well kept ales, while the large garden with impressive views over the rolling countryside proved popular with numerous cyclists. Nonetheless, a rather underwhelming country pub.
