Queen's Head

We have to confess to having had pretty high hopes about the reopening of the Queens Head. Having seen this once fantastic pub systematically run into the ground, it certainly needed new owners to shake the place up. Described on their Facebook profile as a "home away from home", our optimism peaked. Sadly our good ship of hope has been smashed against the jagged rocks of disappointment. A lot of hard work has been done here, but the result is more akin to a sleek West End bar than any sort of home. Black uniform chairs, uniform tables, minimalist walls, the feel was cold and bare - the sort of aspirational-looking bar suburban pubs occasionally get turned into. A couple of plasma screens sat above the bar, while a sign indicated that food is available from tomorrow. Although there were certainly a lot more customers than our last visit, the drink choice was worse. We counted 5 lagers off and no ales (one clip was turned around) - they have seemingly failed to sort stock control just yet. In the end we saw no reason to stay beyond a short visit, as nearby pubs with better drink choice and a warmer atmosphere beckoned us. We'll go back again soon to see if things warm up, but at the moment it feels like a lost opportunity. Shame.
