The Elgin
Geronimo Inns rated:3

Picture of The Elgin

This is miles from the old Firkin pub it used to be. Oh, the traditional interior's not changed that much, and it's still a commanding monolith on the corner of Ladbroke Grove, but it's a vastly different experience. Another acquisition by Geronimo Inns, they've had their way with it and made it something more approaching a destination, as opposed to a place to meet and go somewhere else. Concentrating on cocktails, decent food and chill out music without abandoning very good beer and friendly service is serving them well - the customers we observed appeared to be settled in, there's no doubt about that. They're obviously aiming a bit more upmarket, with a horse's head from the Elgin marbles on the signs outside. It no longer has TVs everywhere, and the fruit machines and ATM are a thing of the past. There's a separate dining area in the back bar and regular DJ sets combine with the loungey interior to set the scene for a cool and trendy bar that happens to be in a traditional pub. But it works.
