The Stag
Having removed the cosy U-shaped bench seating and frosted glass a few years ago now, how is Enfield Town's first upmarket pub faring? Not great, to be honest. The interior is pretty anodyne - there's too much pine and laminate flooring for our tastes. With Ikea-style chairs and an overriding impression of pastel, calming colours, the overall look is known as 'playing it safe' and is best reserved for travel taverns. There are a couple of ales on tap (if you count Courage Best) a jukebox and plasma TVs at either end of the pub, which on our visit were showing sport with the sound off. Service is a very mixed bag, as although we were cheerfully waved good-bye when we left, the landlady behaved as if we were imposing upon them during our visit. With huffs and puffs, minimal verbal interchange and almost no eye contact it was simply rude. Meanwhile, on the food front the place isn't worthy of their self-penned 'gastro' moniker, with cheap catering style fodder at cheap prices - we'd prefer to pay more if it tasted better. Objectively, this a borderline acceptable place to drink, but we won't be rushing back here.

Four buses terminate 50 feet from the Stag, (329, 317, 310, 192) and a lot more travel nearby. Enfield Chase Train station is also less than 5 minutes away. Turn right out of the station and walk down the hill, over the lights and it's on your left, behind the Church.
